A Plan to Recycle the Unrecyclable

The video which I have selected is giving solution to two global problems, Water and Environment.

Styrofoam today has many usages, from packaging to insulation, crafting and food storage. Basic idea is to recycle this material. It’s important to understand that styrofoam is not the most environmentally friendly product. Styrofoam takes a significant amount of time to break down in landfills and should never be burned, as it releases styrene gas, which can be dangerous to our nervous system. Many recycling programs do not yet accept styrofoam.

This video illustrates that how we can make use of this waste material. By heating the Styrofoam at certain temperatures and with right amount of chemicals and with right timing, we can extract activated carbon from it. This activated carbon can be used to purify water as well as this would also reduce environmental pollution.

The idea is simple enough and can be easily implemented in Pakistan as well. Lot of products, food items uses Styrofoam and then this material is discarded into seas, rivers, oceans etc which is a source of environmental pollution in our country. On the other hand clean drinking water is another major problem in our country. Most of the children die as a result of drinking contaminated water.

We can create a recycle bank where people can sell Styrofoam to us. We can then replicate the process of generating activated carbon from this waste, which in turn would help us solving our major problems.
