Seven Basic Quality Tools

There are various tools and methods to monitor quality of production processes. In this article, I have discussed 7 basic quality tools which let a user monitor quality of a production process effectively. These tools are called basic because a user with very little to no understanding of statistical tools can use the below described tools. These are easy to understand, handle and explain.

I have explained these tools in the context of monitoring a software module use case, but these tools have a wide applicability and can be applied to any process which have historical data and repeated process of production.

Check sheet is a form used to collect data in real time at a location where the data is generated.

SPC tool to determine if the process is in control

A flow chart is a diagram which represents a workflow or process.

A Pareto chart consists of bars as well as line graphs, where individual values are represented in descending order by bars, and the cumulative total is represented by the line.

A histogram is an approximate representation of the distribution of numerical or categorical data.

The fishbone diagram identifies many possible causes for an effect or problem. It can be used to structure a brainstorming session. It immediately sorts ideas into useful categories.

Scatter Diagram is a graphical representation which shows the relation between two variables.
