Parametric Patterns

This week in the studio I continued my exploration of parametric design, this week diving into patterns. I began my week looking at whats currently being done with design in ways of parametric patterns. Being an admirer of architecture I decided to start there. I found some really interesting interior designers using patterns for tiles and other various fixtures in residential and commercial building.

After seeing this particular design, I was really intrigued about the possibility of making a pattern and milling into wood over the next week or so. It would be interesting to play with carving the pattern into a wood or even possibly granite slab. I still have to do some more research on the mill we have in studio to see its limitations and applications.

The above pattern took about an hour to make from a 20 minute tutorial. Once you become familiar with the software and its nuances, I have no doubt you could achieve the same affect in ten minutes are so. It’s interesting to think about the possible applications of such patterns or how they could be applied to products or branding to make them unique. It would be cool to have a T-shirt pop up at and event and print shirts on the spot with a similar process so each attendee walked away with a one off design. The beauty with parametric design is it takes the burden off the designer. Once you have a baked definition just changing numerical values changes the entire design. Below is the final output from grasshopper. Each block and corresponding string is an action building the design piece by piece similar to legos.
