Are You Setting Achievable Goals This Year?

Now that quitters day just passed by I will assume that you’re committed to your goals. You feel like the motivation from the past few weeks is waning yet you’re still holding on. That’s important to realize because the motivation was never there to bring you to the finish line.

What’s important to consider now is your progress. The runway you’ve built for yourself is what will determine whether you’ll keep going. If you haven’t done much or skipped days on the way to your goals, that’s a red flag. Because you’re not allowing your brain to adapt to the new lifestyle you’re creating. To commit to your resolutions this year is to adjust to a new environment.

So if you want to find out how to create more momentum I’ve got some pointers. But what’s even more important is to make sure you’re not stretching yourself to the point of breaking. Handling all that added stress won’t make the journey bearable. If you started a new goal this year with the premise of having fun doing it, you need to renew your expectations.

As we touched on this earlier, your goal should be something you focus on every day. I won’t tell you that you have to write it down in your journal or agenda every morning. That doesn’t do anything to help you advance forward. It’s easier to internalize a habit rather than brainwash yourself into chasing nothingness.

One thing that will happen as you work on your goal though is that you’ll have bad days. No matter who you are, there will be an emergency at some point. Or there will be circumstances which will change your state of mind. When this happens you’re vulnerable to changing your mind. And now the thing that you cared about most when you stated your goal, takes a back seat.

The important thing to remember is that a goal needs to take priority in your life. At least until you’ve internalized it. You will very seldom skip, eating, brushing your teeth or taking a shower. And if it happens it will be if you have to visit your loved ones in the hospital and you stay there overnight. That’s the mentality you need to have for your goal. It’s to make you better. Why put away your improvement for something that requires your attention at the moment?
