Ruminating on Religion

This is merely a humble collection of thoughts put together at midnight and submitted without revision to maintain authenticity. Apologies forthwith for any sloppy prose.

I have a shameful pretence towards organised religion.

It is why when I first decided Atheism was the path for me I immediately fell under the sway of Communism, a religion without a god, and why, even after I had asserted the likely reality of their being no God, set upon the task of fashioning various different religions. One being inspired by Japanese Pure Land Buddhism and Islam, another a sort of American style Hellenistic cult and another a sort of odd hybrid between the beliefs of Akhenaten and Robespierre.

Having successfully inoculated myself to the desire of theology through the medium of the words of Christopher Hitchens, this frightful pox has abated for now. While I myself am free from delusion I fear the American people, given the economic structure our people are subject too, will be unable to enjoy the fruits of unbelief given the stressors of a consumer world.

A part of me is abhorred by some of my contemporaries. At least those who, in the wake of a morally relative America, feel free enough to act in aggressive, ignorant or haughty manners. At the sight of these abuses to the peace I tempted to throw myself once again into the tender and controlling arms of religion.

Infidelity, or specifically, the breaking of vows for one’s pleasure is another area. Polyamory is yet another aspect of modernity where I have the urge to fall back into a theologically rigid conception of marriage. Pornogrpahy both subjects and repulses me in equal measure, and thus, this creeping latent Catholic desire to prohibit commercialised sex seeps in.

Given all that repulses me, and perhaps my distaste is the vestige of a Christian moral upbringing, I still remain an Atheist. I remain one with a liberal mind to the new and the unexplored and a worried heart to what society has in store as faith continues to fail.
